Jack and I probably 'bonded' during the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Ivan in 2004. On the eve of Ivan, I secured the building and equipment, generator, etc, and left the station probably around 9pm when things were getting pretty rough. Our staff evacuated to various points. Jack and Nancy spent the night in Bay Minette with a friend. Skip Davis invited me to stay at his downtown Foley office (which was a fortress, with a generator), and I rode it out there until around sunrise. I made it back in to the station and was on air by a little after 6am and it was a non-stop flow of phone calls and interviews, damage reports and general survival information. Jack, who was 78 at the time, was the next one to make it back in to the station sometime around noon and he was a welcomed sight. He took the mic and the phone and did post-storm coverage and interviews for almost 10 hours, until we shut down at 10pm. David Horton at Riviera Utilities offered an extra bed in one of the rooms at Days Inn reserved by Riviera Utilities which we happily accepted and appreciated. Air conditioning is such a wonderful thing in these moments. The next day, we were back at it at 6am and Jack handled the main studio and mic for 12 solid hours. He enjoyed so many great moments on air and otherwise during his amazing broadcasting career, but he told me, a number of times, he had never felt so connected to his audience. He maintained that connection with his WHEP audience for another 12 years before hanging up his headphones. You are loved, forever missed and much appreciated, Jack The Bell!"
