News for Tuesday, May 31st, 2016

  • One of the news presenters for the local news operation at WPMI-TV (Kelly Jones) gasped at a video recording of an automobile being driven over a motorcycle while presenting a report about it on their local news program for the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. ("Local 15 Today") this Tuesday.
  • WPMI-TV had a programming segment named "UMinute" on their main broadcast channel this Tuesday during a break for their local news program for the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. (they usually had segments under that name in their programming on a regular basis between last spring and last autumn).
  • One of the news presenters and news reporters for the local news operation at WKRG-TV (Chad Petri) had used a certain slogan (or "catchphrase") at the beginnings of their local news programs for Saturday and Sunday mornings ("WKRG News 5 This Morning: Saturday" and "WKRG News 5 This Morning: Sunday") in recent times at the beginnings of their local 9:00 a.m. and midday news programs for Monday through Friday("WKRG News 5 at 9" and "WKRG News 5 at Noon") this past Monday on the thirtieth day of this May (he was saying, "I don't know who's watching, but I'm glad you are").

News for Monday, May 30th, 2016

  • A member of WALA-TV who usually only did reports about traffic conditions for their local news programming in recent times was the news presenter for the local news programming they had past Saturday evening (between 9:39 p.m. and 10:09 p.m.) on the twenty-eighth day of this May (her name was Asha Staples).
  • One of the news presenters for the local news operation at WKRG-TV (Ashley Knight) had used the word "monster" while presenting a report about fishing tournament said to had occurred in their local broadcast area this past Sunday on the twenty-ninth day of this May (specifically near the city of Orange Beach in southwest Alabama) as a "monster" while presenting the report on their local 10:00 p.m. news program that day ("WKRG News 5 at 10").
  • One of the news presenters for the local news program WKRG-TV had in their programming between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. this Monday (Jessica Taloney of "WKRG News 5 This Morning") had erroneously referred to one candidates for the presidency of the United States (Bernard (Bernie) Sanders) as "Democratic presidential nominee" whereas its other news presenter (Chad Petri*) had erroneously referred to another one of the candidates for the presidency (Donald Trump) as "Republican presidential nominee" on the program (the news presenter named Chad Petri had referred to the one named Donald Trump as "presumptive Republican presidential nominee" shortly before referring to him as "Republican presidential nominee" on the same edition of the program.**
(*he was substituting for a regular news presenter for the program: Bill Riales)

(**both instances in which the candidates were called "nominee" occurred in a regular feature of the program named "5 Things You Need to Know") .

Commentary: A sneaky comment by a local news broadcaster, a teaser in a contest, and a rare type of news report in broadcasting

  • One of the news presenters for the local news operation at WPMI-TV (Greg Peterson) had sneakingly used part of their local 6:30 p.m. news program for their companion station ("Local 15 News at 6:30" for WJTC-TV) to say that the idea of a debate between two specific candidates for the presidency of the United States (Bernard (Bernie) Sanders and Donald Trump) could be "interesting" after presenting a report about the idea and mentioning a public poll about it on the official World Wide Web site for his own station earlier this calendar week.
  • I was glad to a see a member of the local news operation for WALA-TV (Lee Peck) present a report about a convention for nominating candidates for the positions of president and vice president of the United States for a political party named the Libertarian Party on their local 9:00 p.m. news program ("FOX 10 News at 9:00 p.m.") this past Friday on the twenty-seventh day of this May since they and other news broadcasters usually did not have reports about candidates for either one of those positions representing that party or any other political party besides the Democratic Party and the Republican Party in their broadcasts over the past year.*
  • One of the weather reporters for the local news operation at WALA-TV (Jason Smith) should have not said anything about a certain word for a recent contest of theirs ("The Cell phone for a Year Sweepstakes") not having "anything to do with any specific championship football program" or made any reference to it at all while presenting the word on their local 9:00 p.m. news program ("FOX 10 News at 9:00 p.m.") this past Friday since many residents of their local broadcast area would have been reminded of the team either way (he made its connection to the football program even more obvious for then when he said, All of the [University of] Alabama [football] fans will be thrilled; the Auburn [University football] fans, you can still get a free cell phone [service plan] for a year if you put in [the word] 'Tide' [for the contest] ").
(*this Sunday was the last day of the convention (the candidate nominated for the position of president was a person named Gary Johnson whereas the candidate nominated for the position of vice president was a person named William (Bill) Weld))

News for Saturday, May 28th, 2016

  • WALA-TV was "off the air" (or not broadcasting) between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. this Saturday and this past Friday (the twenty-seventh day of this May).*
  • According to WKRG-TV, technical problems caused one of the news presenters and news reporters for their local news operation (Ashley Knight) to present news from a tablet computer instead of a teleprompter on their local 6:00 p.m. news program ("WKRG News 5 at 6:00") this Saturday.
  • According to WEAR-TV, their main broadcast channel was set to have a special local program about tropical cyclones ("Stormwatch 2016") during a time period when it was usually set to have network programming from their main provider of network programming (the American Broadcasting Company (ABC)) on a weekly basis this Sunday (between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.). As for the network program it would have been set to have during that time period this Sunday if not for this plan to have the special local program during that time period (its name was "America's Funniest Home Videos"), well, according to the guides to the channel from the World Wide Web sites for TitanTV, TV Guide, and Zap2it, it was set to have a recording of the network program later the next day (between 1:36 a.m. and 2:36 a.m. next Monday on the thirtieth day of this May).
(*they usually had programming during this time period on a daily basis in recent times)

News for Friday, May 27th, 2016

  • WPMI-TV had an interview with a member of Alabama Public Radio (named Barbara Charnetski) on their local news program for the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. ("Local 15 Today") this Friday (she was there promoting a plan to raise funds for Alabama Public Radio on the Saturday of the fourth day of this June).
  • One of the news presenters for the local news operation at WPMI-TV (Kelly Jones) had mentioned their holding company (or "parent company" (the Sinclair Broadcast Group)) while presenting a news report in which the company was said to have had an "exclusive" interview with a person in a video recording that had accompanied the report without acknowledging them as their holding company for their local news program for the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. this past Tuesday on the twenty-fourth day of this May.

News for Thursday, May 26th, 2016

  • According to a notice from the Comcast Corporation, the prices for some of the cable TV and Internet services provided by their subsidiary in Mobile County (Comcast Cablevision of Mobile) were set to change on the Friday of the first day of this July.
  • One of the local radio announcers for WAVH-FM was interviewed for a series of audio recordings about residents within or around Mobile with their own businesses (the name of the announcer was Sean Sullivan; the name of the series of audio recordings was the "Mobile, Alabama Business Podcast").
  • Some of the news presenters for the local news operation at WPMI-TV had used some of their local news programming for this Thursday to promote a special program about tropical cyclones ("Surviving the Storm") set to appear on their main broadcast channel next Wednesday (between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.) on the first day of this June (it was also set to appear on the main broadcast channel for their companion station (WJTC-TV) later that day between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.).

News for Wednesday, May 25th, 2016

  • One of the news presenters for the local news operation at WPMI-TV (Darwin Singleton) had promoted a plan by their holding company (or "parent company") to host a public discussion about heroin as if it were their own plan while part of their local news program for the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. ("Local 15 Today") this Wednesday.
  • The wife of a news reporter for the local news operation at WKRG-TV appeared in the first part of a series of news reports about a virus named "Zika" planned for their programming this calendar week this past Monday on the twenty-third day of this May (the name of the wife was Stephany Carter; the name of the news reporter to whom she was married was Allen Carter).
  • WJTC-TV recently had a national religious TV program that had been part of their regular programming plans for at least 20 years removed from their current regular programming plans (they usually had it in their programming from Monday through Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m.; as for what it was usually called, it was usually called "Believer's Voice of Victory")*
(*according to a World Wide Web site named TitanTV, WMPV-TV and WHBR-TV still had "Believer's Voice of Victory" in their regular programming plans; as for the program that took its place in WJTC-TV's regular programming plans, it was a syndicated courtroom program named "Divorce Court")

Commentary on the phrase 'just Google it', a publicity stunt, and some suggestive dialogue in local broadcasting

(note: the first paragraph of the report titled "News for Monday, May 23rd, 2016" was amended)
  • I wish one of the members for the local news operation at WPMI-TV (Taren Reed) had not said, "Just Google it" while telling viewers and listeners of one of their local news programs ("Local 15 News at Noon") who may have Internet connections how they could test those connections free of charge today (some folks may had thought she was being rude and unfriendly that time). She could have been more helpful by mentioning certain programs for testing those connections free of charge instead.
  • I felt like I was watching a big publicity stunt for the city of Mobile sponsored by the government for the city itself on the main programming feed for WALA-TV this Tuesday since the hosts for one of their local TV programs (Joe Emer and Chasity Byrd of "Studio 10") were publicizing the down-town area of Mobile in a very blatant and positive way during its broadcast from the area this Tuesday (the host named Joe Emer even said the program was "all-about" the growth of the area while part of the broadcast).
  • I had noticed that one of the news presenters and news reporters for the local news operation at WKRG-TV (Bill Riales) had said some comments that many folks may consider both offensive and unnecessary while part of their local news program for the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a. m. ("WKRG News 5 This Morning") earlier this May: For example, I heard him say, "Shovel the hail up" as part of a report about hail, and, "What the hail was [all that about]" to a weather reporter of theirs (John Nodar) as part of a weather segment for the program.

News for Monday, May 23rd, 2016 (amended)

(*amendment note: the site erroneously had the year 2015 in its listing for the position)

News for Sunday, May 22nd, 2016

  • One of the weather reporters for the local news operation at WKRG-TV (Melissa Constanzer) said she was "happy to be a woman in America" in response to a news report about female persons who were pilots in the Second World War being eligible to their bodies buried at Arlington National Cemetery in the city of Arlington in the state of Virginia upon their deaths that one of their news presenters for the operation (Chad Petri) had presented on their local news program for Sunday mornings ("WKRG News 5 This Morning: Sunday") this Sunday.
  • WKRG-TV had a dramatic narrative in an advertisement for a new series of reports planned for some of their local news programs for the next calendar week in their local news programming this Sunday (its narrator (Emily DeVoe) had described the subject of the reports ("the Zika virus") this way: "It's a story so important, we have Peter Albrecht, Bill Riales, Jacqueline Quynh, and myself working to answer your questions like who's at risk, what's being done locally to prepare, and why do conditions along the coast make for the perfect storm if there's ever an outbreak").
  • One of the news presenters and news reporters for the local news operation at WPMI-TV (Andrea Ramey) had used the word "destroy" to describe how a group of softball players from Auburn University defeated a group of softball players from Jacksonville State University in a game of softball this Sunday before referring to a professional tennis player (named Roger Federer) as "the greatest player of all time" and another (named Serena Williams) as "the world's number one" while introducing a report about them from a national cable TV and satellite TV programming service owned by their holding (or parent) company (the Tennis Channel) on their local 5:00 p.m. news program ("Local 15 News at 5 p.m.").
(*WPMI-TV and the Tennis Channel share the same owners within the same company: the Sinclair Broadcast Group)

News for Saturday, May 21st, 2016

  • A digital video file with a local TV program dating back to the year 1983 that WKRG-TV used the have in their programming on a regular basis by then was uploaded onto the World Wide Web site for an Internet video service named YouTube (the name of the program was "Small Fry News").
  • A digital video file with a local TV program dating back to the year 1986 that used to appear on a special cable TV channel (a "leased-access channel") for Comcast Cablevision of Mobile on a regular basis was uploaded onto the World Wide Web site mentioned in the previous paragraph of this report (the name of the program was "WABB BLAB").

  • One of the other members for the local news operation at WKRG-TV (a news presenter and news reporter named Devon Walsh) usually had a dramatic inflection in her voice while presenting news about a former member of the news department for their main provider of network programming (Morley Safer of the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS)) in their local news programming this past Thursday on the nineteenth day of this May.
  • Two of the other news presenters for the local news operation at WKRG-TV (Bill Riales and Jessica Taloney) had used part of their local news program for the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. ("WKRG News 5 This Morning") to make reference to the manager of their broadcast operation (Mark Bunting) visiting a promotional event for their main provider of network programming called an "upfront" (or the "CBS Upfront" to be precise) in the city of New York in the state of New York this past Thursday (the one named Jessica Taloney said the manager was "hobnobbing" while talking about his attending the event).*
(*some messages and images attributed to the manager about the trip to the "upfront" were posted onto a Facebook page about him)

News for Monday, May 16th, 2016

    • The founder of a school of dance in Mobile (Mary Lou Noletto of Sheffield School of the Dance) was not called by only her last name in a live news report about her and a former student of the school (Melanie Petithory) that was part of a local news program for WPMI-TV between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. ("Local 15 Today") this Monday (the founder was usually called by both her first name and middle name after initially being called by her full name whereas the former student was called by only her last name and by only her first name at separate points after initially being called by both names.
    • The news presenter and news reporter for WKRG-TV mentioned at the beginning of the first paragraph of this report incorrectly said their local news program for the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. was being simulcast with their companion station (WFNA-TV) while part of the program last Friday on the thirteenth day of this May (he said it a few seconds after presenting a report in which the companion station was mentioned; as for the way he said it, he said it this way: "If I'm not mistaken, I think we're simulcasting - are we simulcasting - this broadcast in the morning on the CW (part of the brand name for WFNA-TV: CW55), so if you're watching on the CW, thanks for doing that".

    • WALA-TV, WKRG-TV, and WPMI-TV had videos with different degrees of quality (or frame rates) in their programmings about the aforementioned crash this past Friday (for example WALA-TV had live video of the location of the crash with a frame rate similar to that of film whereas WKRG-TV and WPMI-TV each had live video of the location with a frame rate normally used for video).
    • One of the news presenters for the local news operation at WKRG-TV (Mel Showers) used some of the programming they had about the aforementioned crash to say his granddaughter usually taught dancing at the school where the crash occurred in recent times, but not at the time of the crash (she was said to be there on the previous day).
    • The programming WKRG-TV had about the aforementioned crash this past Friday caused their local 6:00 p.m. news program ("WKRG News 5 at 6") to end a few minutes later than when it usually ended from Monday from Friday in recent times (it had ended at 6:32 p.m. rather than sometime between 6:25 p.m. and 6:28 p.m.; by then, one of its news presenters (Mel Showers) had said, "We now join 'The Andy Griffith Show' all ready in progress", even though their broadcast channel for both the local news program and the show show would actually have advertisements for about four minutes before having an episode of the show all ready in progress immediately after an animated sequence in which the main announcer for their broadcast operation (Jay Gardner) announced their return to regular programming.

    • According to Mississippi Public Broadcasting, the reason past editions of a radio program of theirs named "Everyday Tech" were rebroadcast last Wednesday on the fourth day of this May and this past Wednesday on the eleventh day of it was due to a death in the family of one of the hosts for the program (Ashley Jefcoat) having occurred before the fourth day of this May.
    • Alabama Public Television was set to have three of their own TV programs (some documentaries named "Jeremiah", "Paratus 14:50", and "World War II: Alabama Remembers") take precedence over certain programs from a national TV programming service named World on the digital sub-channels of their network of TV stations (including the one licensed to serve Mobile: WEIQ-TV) that usually only had the live programming feed for the service in recent times between this past Wednesday on the eleventh day of this May and the Tuesday on the thirty-first day of this May.

    • According to WPMI-TV, a collision of automobiles on an interstate bridge over Mobile Bay (Jubilee Parkway (also known as "the Bayway")) prevented one of the news presenters for their local news program for the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. (Kelly Jones of "Local 15 Today") from appearing on the program between 5:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. this past Tuesday due to her getting caught in the traffic caused by the collision.
    • According to WPMI-TV, the news presenter referenced in the previous paragraph of this report was still able to be part of the first quarter of their local news program for the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. this past Tuesday: she had used telephony to do so, but mainly for reporting on the. traffic situation that prevented her from appearing on the program (she even said she had never been that "late for work" in her 17 years of broadcasting and said that anyone who felt the need to "use the bathroom" before traveling over "the Bayway" at the time she spoke better do so before traveling over it (she had described the "bathroom" suggestion as "keeping it real" immediately after mentioning it on the program during her broadcast about the traffic situation through the use of telephony).

News for Tuesday, May 10th, 2016

    • According to WALA-TV, the mothers of some members of their local news operation were interviewed on one of their local news programs ("FOX 10 News at 4:00 p.m.") this past Monday on the ninth day of this May (one of the mothers was a member of the operation herself).

Commentary: News broadcasters make fun of advertiser for their broadcast operation

Two of the news presenters and news reporters for the local news operation at WKRG-TV (Ashley Knight and Peter Albrecht) had used some of their local news programming for this past Sunday on the eighth day of this May to make fun of a lawyer from their local broadcast area (David  Maloney) who had advertisements for his law firm (Maloney-Frost) in their programming on a frequent basis in recent times when they should have only presented details about his arrest that day and important details about his self such as his name and his law firm (the one named Ashley Knight said the lawyer may need his own attorney (basically another lawyer like him, specifically one legally able to defend other folks in courts of law) while introducing the report in their programming; the one named Peter Albrecht quoted some of the words the lawyer had used in some of the advertisements before presenting video of one of those advertisements (it had the lawyer say he would go after folks who drive under the influence of alcohol and contact him about it)).

News for Sunday, May 8th, 2016

    • One of the local radio announcers for WAVH-FM was part of a report WKRG-TV had in their local news programming this past Saturday on the seventh day of this May about a beer festival that occurred in the city of Daphne in southwest Alabama that day (the name of the announcer was Sean Sullivan; the name of the festival was "99 Bottles of Beer on the Lawn").
    • WPMI-TV, WKRG-TV, and WALA-TV each had a report about a lawyer from their local broadcast area who usually appeared in televised advertisements for one of the law firms in the area getting arrested during the morning hours of this Sunday in the local news programming they had during the evening hours of this Sunday (the name of the lawyer was David Maloney; the name of the law firm was Maloney-Frost).
    • One of the local news programs WPMI-TV had in their programming this Sunday ("Local 15 News at 5 p.m.")  had a message (labeled "breaking" and "helpline") in a news ticker of theirs about a TV program from their main provider of network programming that was usually part of their main broadcast channel's programming plans for Saturday mornings in recent times ("Noodle and Doodle" from the National Broadcasting Company (NBC)) being set to be part of its programming plan for this past Saturday a few hours earlier than the time period in which it was usually part of its programming plans for Saturday morning (between 8:30 and 9:00 instead of between 11:30 and 12:00 p.m. due to special programming from their main provider of network programming about hockey). This explains why the last quarter of another program from their main provider of network programming that was usually part of its programming plans for Saturday mornings during this time period in recent times was not part of its programming this past Saturday ("Today").

    Saturday, May 7, 2016

News for Saturday, May 7th, 2016

    Commentary: A questionable news presentation

WALA-TV had a member of their local news operation who usually only did news reports for the operation present news for the local news programming they had this past Saturday night (between 9:29 p.m. and 9:49 p.m.) on the thirtieth day of this past April (her name was Devan Coffaro).

Personally I did not like the way she usually presented news for the program (she often raised her voice to the point of sounding very dramatic) and thought she acted as if something was either bothering her or making her very nervous.

She also made me wonder whether she was really being herself or just pretending to be very bothered or nervous for a person in charge of her position. If she was really bothered or nervous, she should have been given more time to prepare for the program. If this was not the case and she was really just pretending for a person in charge of her position, he or she should be ashamed of his self or her self for making her do so.
