News for Saturday, January 31st, 2015

  • This past Wednesday's (January 28th) edition of WKRG-TV's local midday news program ("WKRG News 5 at Noon") had a report in which the snowstorm that affected parts of the northeastern region of the United States on the previous Monday (January 26th) and Tuesday (January 27th) was referenced by the name it was given at the Weather Channel, a national cable TV and satellite TV programming service ("Juno" was the name given to the storm).

News for Friday, January 30th, 2015

  • Various reporters and news presenters for WALA-TV, WKRG-TV, and WPMI-TV were reminiscing about an ice storm that occurred in their local broadcast areas back in the year 2014 as part of their local news programming this past Thursday, January 29th, since it was the first anniversary of it.
  • Shortly before this past Thursday, the cable TV system operated by Comcast Cablevision of Mobile began sending different data about its Music Choices channels to digital transport adapters connected to it (the data normally sent before then included names based on different categories of music for the adapters to display on the channels with music that applied to them; as for the new data, it included names based on the letters "MC" and the channel numbers for the music. For example, it had MC01 for channel 401 and MC50 for channel 450).

An important notice

  • I had decided to change my work pattern for this weblog for the betterment of it and my life in general after realizing I made some errors in in one of the news articles I had posted here last Saturday, January 24th (my news report for today has more details about these errors). They reminded me of my tending to put myself under unnecessary pressure for this weblog (even though I should be enjoying it) and made me realize that I should change my work pattern for the betterment of it and my life in general. So I decided to only have news articles for this weblog published during evening hours, take breaks from my computer more often, and avoid using that computer longer than necessary. I may even consider only publishing news articles from Monday through Friday in order to have more time to relax.

News for Thursday, January 29th, 2015

  • This past Thursday's edition of WPMI-TV's local 10:00 p.m. news program ("Local 15 News at 10:00") and today's edition of their local morning news program ("Local 15 Today") each had a reporter from another TV station (Sergio Avila of KSNV-TV in Las Vegas, Nevada in Las Vegas, Nevada for the first report; Kelly Koopsmans of KOMO-TV in Seattle, Washington for the second report) broadcasting from Glendale, Arizona about activities related to the National Football League's plans to hold a championship football game there this Sunday, February 1st (the game would be called "Super Bowl XLIX").
  • The persons who provided the aforementioned broadcasts and the TV stations their represented had the same parent company as WPMI-TV: the Sinclair Broadcast Group.

News for Wednesday, January 28th, 2015

  • WALA-TV's local entertainment and lifestyle program ("Studio 10") did not begin with its regular opening sequence for its broadcast today; it began with a preview of some of its segments for today instead (the program usually had such previews after the regular opening sequence before then).
  • WALA-TV 's local 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. news programs ("FOX 10 News at 5:00 p.m." and "FOX 10 News at 9:00 p.m.") each had another live report from New York, New York this past Tuesday, January 27th, within 24 hours of their previous live reports from there.
  • Both of the live reports for the aforementioned news program for this past Tuesday were about the outcomes of the snowstorm that happened in New York and in other parts of the northeastern region of the United States that day and this past Monday, January 26th. They even had the same person who provided the previous live reports (Yon Pomrenzie of the Cable News Network).
  • The aforementioned person answered a "follow-up" question about the snowstorm from one of the regular news presenters for the aforementioned news programs as part of each report just as he for each of the previous live reports (both of the regular news presenters got the chance to ask him a "follow-up" question).
(clarification note: this weblog's first reports about the previous live reports from New York were edited to clarify that each of the local news programs only had one of those live reports and that Yon Pomrenzie had answered only one "follow-up" question during each of those reports).

  • This past Monday's (January 26th) editions of WALA-TV's local 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. news programs ("FOX 10 News at 5:00 p.m" and "FOX 10 News at 9:00 p.m.") each had a live report from New York, New York about a snowstorm that was happening there and in other parts of the northeastern region of the United States.

  • WPMI-TV's main programming recently had an advertisement with a message about their parent company (Sinclair Broadcast Group, even though the message had an alternate name for them) and organizations specialized in providing information about opportunities for new jobs and referring applications for folks who want them ("Sinclair Communications is looking for organizations that regularly distribute information about employment opportunities to job applicants or job applications to refer."). It also had the address for their own company for which these organizations may use to contact their own director of human resources if they want to be notified about new positions in their company.

Commentary: An unnecessary practice gets worse

  • I had noticed some of WALA-TV's news presenters and news reporters expressing personal opinions about certain news reports that may or not be their own opinions about them on a more frequent basis over the past couple of calendar weeks as part of their local evening news programs ("FOX 10 News at 5:00 p.m." and "FOX 10 News at 9:00 p.m."). I wish they would not do this any more and focus more on providing facts (if their bosses had required them to express personal opinions about news reports or allowed them to do so on their own accords, I wish these bosses would reconsider either way).

News for Saturday, January 24th, 2015

  • WKRG-TV's sports reporter was one of the commentators for WNSP-FM's (105.5) broadcast of the 66th Senior Bowl game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile today (his name was Randy Patrick Setterstorm).

    Friday, January 23, 2015

    • WNSP-FM (105.5) and the national TV and satellite TV programming service for the National Football League (the NFL Network) had plans for broadcasting a football game expected to take place at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile this Saturday, January 24th (the game would be called the 66th Senior Bowl).
    • Today's edition of WPMI-TV's local morning news program ("Local 15 Today") had a report narrated by one of the camera operators for their local news department along with appearances by him (his name and professional electronic mail address were displayed in the report like those of WPMI-TV's regular reporters; as for what it was about, it was about some of the folks expected to be among the players for the game expected to take place at Ladd-Peebles Stadium this Saturday).
    • According to WALA-TV, they were completely separate from WFNA-TV by this past Thursday, January 23rd, in spite of their having separate parent companies (the Meredith Corporation for WALA-TV; Media General for WFNA-TV) due to their former parent company's (LIN Media) merger with the parent company of WKRG-TV (the Media General prior to the merger) last December. This explains why WFNA-TV was still set to have local news segment ("FOX 10 News Update on CW55") and a local public affairs program produced by WALA-TV ("Step Up") broadcast on a regular basis after the merger (the news segments were usually about a minute in length and usually broadcast between 9:00 p.m and 9:02 p.m. from Monday through Friday).

    • WABD-FM's (97.5) last regular morning radio announcer (Glenn ("Qtip") Johnson) left his position at WABD-FM earlier this January in order to relocate from Mobile to Nashville, Tennessee to live with his wife (Cherish Lombard) since her positions for a local TV station in Nashville, Tennessee (WKRN-TV) required her to relocate from Mobile to Nashville.

    • The same news presenter provided a report about the reinauguration of the governor for WAVH-FM's (106.5) local midday news and discussion program ("Midday Mobile") via telephone today.

Commentary: Not surprised by local TV news program not having a certain competitor mentioned

    • I was not surprised to hear news presenters on recent editions of some of WKRG-TV's local news programs say that residents of their local broadcast area could watch the championship game of the National Football Conference that would take place this past Sunday (January 18th) "on the FOX Network" rather than "on WALA-TV" or even "on FOX 10" in reference to the local TV station affiliated with the network since other local broadcasters in the past usually avoided referring to other local TV stations by their proper names in order to stay competitive in their positions.

Commentary: Surprised by language of local TV news reporter

    • I was surprised to hear a news reporter for WKRG-TV say the word "crappy" in the context of something being described as inferior as part of a report in which he had cited certain critics of littoral combat ships as having used that word to describe the ships in that sense. I wish he had not used it and simply said that those critics were describing the ships as inferior due to its past connection to a word used to describe feces (it made me wonder whether he had no choice but to say it or else he would have lost his position at WKRG-TV. He may have been forced to use it to get the attention of every one of his listeners and/or provoke reactions both positive and negative).
